The Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies are a fairly new team to the NBA, and didn’t actually begin in Memphis; they were originally created as an expansion team, when the NBA wanted to try creating a team in Canada. Originating in Vancouver in British Columbia, the Grizzlies were established in 1995 alongside the Toronto Raptors.
Before the Grizzlies were established, the only major league team to ever play in the NBA for Tornto were the Huskies. The Toronto only played the 1946-47 season before closing. Many attempts were made by locals to bring Toronto back into the NBA, but the break only came in 1995 when the Raptors formally began as a franchise in 1993.
The Toronto Grizzlies lasted six seasons before eventually transferring to Memphis. They didn’t live a particularly memorable life while they lasted, either, with their 1998-99 season closing out at a disappointing 15-76 win ratio. Their following games failed to produce many wins either, and in 1998, they were locked out of the league for good.
The Grizzlies were eventually granted a relocation from the NBA to Memphis. Their first season in 2001 was also unremarkable, but individual players like Pau Gasol and Shane Battier stood out as stellar players for the team. Gasol was chosen for rookie of the year, and shared a spot with Battier in the NBA All-Rookie First Team for the season.
In 2006, Rudy Gay joined the ranks of the Memphis Grizzlies, and also proved himself as a standout player almost immediately. He finished third of that season’s Rookie of the Year voting, and pushed the team to win 22 games the following year. Gay also went on to play, and win a gold medal, for the American team for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
Since their re-emergence under the Memphis banner, the Grizzlies have put up stiffer competition than their earlier days. Despite not having a single championship, division or conference title to their name, they still put up a real performance in the arena.
