The Texas Rangers
Based in Fort Worth, Texas, the ‘Rangers are the state’s representatives in Major League Baseball. With a colorful list of hall-of-famers, consistent wins in Division games, and a dedicated fan base, the Rangers are truly the pride of Texas.
The Rangers weren’t actually called the rangers when they were first established in 1961. They were known as the Washington Senators back then, and existed only as an expansion team to Washington DC. They moved to Texas following the 1971 season, and in the spring after, the team made their debut as the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers then made the renovated Turnpike Stadium their home. Reopening in 1972 as the Arlington Stadium, the team played their first game against the California Angels here. Unfortunately, they lost, and underwent a management change the following year.
Things began to look up for the Texas Rangers after this short hiccup. In 1974, then finished an overall second in the American Lead, and came into the distinction of being the only team to finish above .500 after 100-loss seasons. Players like Mike Hargrove and Jeff Burroughs won the American League Rookie of the Year and American League MVP titles, respectively, in this year alone.
The Rangers’ home, the Arlington Stadium, was replaced in 1991 with the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The then-owner of the Rangers at the time, a certain George W. Bush, would go on to become the Governor of Texas, and eventually the President of the United States by the New Millennium. Bush does not hold any stake in the company today, but he still remains to be a dedicated fan of the team.
In recent years, the Rangers struggled with turbulent times, but managed to hit big in 2011. They successfully defended their American League West Division title for the second year running, and even made it into the World Series. While they didn’t win the latter, the Texas Rangers are still a part of the state’s close-knit baseball culture.
