A group of business men started the bank in the latter half of the 19th century. They weren’t initially involved in banking, but dealt with transactions that involved grain instead. Since there weren’t many institutions that handled their unique financial needs at the time, these enterprising individuals took it upon themselves to create something that catered to their needs better.
The first Bank of Toronto opened its doors on 78 Church Street in 1856. Only three staff members manned this branch, but the founding members were quick to expand the institution within and beyond Ontario.
The Bank of Toronto found competition from Dominion Bank, who opened their doors in Ontario in 1871. Dominion also created a vast network of branches, and became the first Canadian bank to operate two branches within Toronto. Both banks boomed in business as the 19th century came to a close.
