The San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are considered to be one of the best teams in the entire NBA, and for good reason: They sport four championship titles, four Conference titles, and eighteen division titles. That, on top of the highest winning percentage in the NBA, make them just as popular with their loyal fans than with their critics.

The Spurs didn’t actually begin as an NBA team, or an expansion franchise either; they were actually a part of the American Basketball Association as the Dallas Chaparrals. Founded in 1967, this team was unpopular, despite their modest overall performance in the years they were active. The team moved to San Antonio in 1973 due to financial troubles.

The new San Antonio Spurs lost their first game ever, but attracted a crowd six-thousand people strong. Since this game, the team fought an uphill, yet winning battle towards improvement and court performance; the Spurs did so well that they were ranked as one of the top teams in the entire league, despite never making the playoffs in this era.

Some of the earliest professional basketball legends were formed with the Spurs. Players like Swen Nater and George Gavin cut their teeth while playing with San Antonio, and pushed them into acceptance with the NBA for the 1976-1977 season. A rivalry with another Texas-based team, the Houston Rockets, was quickly developed.

Their first seven years in the NBA was a fruitful one; the Spurs raked up five division titles, and were favorites for the playoffs. The following years leading up to the new millennium, however, would not be as successful as their division rankings. Players like Terry Robinson were still able to set themselves apart as great NBA players.

In 1997, Tim Duncan was drafted into the NBA, and proved to be the fighting force the Spurs needed to find success once again. Duncan, and the combined efforts of his team, would go on to take home championship titles in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007. Many conference titles were also won by the Spurs under Duncan’s leadership.

Combining all of the good and not-so-good history, the San Antonio Spurs still manage to hold some impressive statistics. Alongside the Chicago Bulls, the Spurs are one of only two teams in the NBA to hold perfect records throughout their Finals games. San Antonio also maintains a record of 50 consecutive wins, and rank third place in the list of teams with the highest winning percentage.
